Acts #27-29 - The Number '59' is EVERYWHERE!!

I was feeling pretty good when I noticed that I am on #29...until I realized that I still have 30 more to do and only like 2 1/2 months to do them in if I plan to finish by my goal date of February 22, 2014. Guess I better get a-cracka-lackin!!!

#27 was made possible, thanks to my Uncle Rich again. This one actually gave me chills when he called to tell me about it. Jeff and I were driving and on our way to NY when Uncle Rich called. He said that he had received one of those donation request letters in the mail from Disabled American Veterans. You know the kind, the ones that also include the 500 return address labels with your name and address on them. Requests that people usually throw out, but they keep the labels and use them later on...I'm guilty of using those labels an not actually donating to their cause. Don't judge, you know you've done it too! Anyway, he received this letter on Wednesday, the day before the 1-year anniversary of Grandpa's passing but didn't open it until Saturday morning. It was addressed to Dick Yeomans. Now both my uncle and my grandfather's names are Richard, but everyone called my grandfather "Dick" and my uncle "Rich", so it was really addressed to my grandfather's name. When he opened the envelope it listed 3 different donation options; $5, $9 or "other". Now if you have been following this blog, you know the significance of the #59 in our family and that I am doing 59 acts of kindness. So it wasn't asking for $5, $10 or any other rounded up number of money...it was $5 or $9 and it was addressed to Grandpa. Already weird enough. Well when Uncle Rich was telling me all of this as we were driving, we drove past exit #159. I asked him to send me a picture of the letter so I could attach it with this post; see below. Notice that he donated $59 to them and the check number was 1059...I have to call him about that one, not sure if that check number was a coincidence or not? Either way, pretty cool if I may say so myself :)

#28 Coat Drive - I guess I can't really call it a coat "drive", more or less just collected a couple of coats that a few people donated. I brought them up to NY with me and gave them to grandma to give to her friend Sonya. Sonya volunteers at a soup kitchen and they provide coats for the people that come in and need them. I get yelled at all the time, usually by a girl I work with, for never wearing a coat. I am guilty as charged. I hate wearing coats, especially in GA. I don't see the point down here anyway. If it's too cold in the morning, I will start the car a few minutes before I leave so it's already warm on the drive to work. So I literally walk out the door, get in a warm car, walk a few feet from the car into the warm office building and sit here in the heat for 9 hours a day. Coats feel restricting to me! I probably would have donated all of my jackets too had it not been for me freezing my tail off in NY...as much as I hate coats, you have got to be nuts not to wear one up there!

Each year my grandmother's church collects hats, gloves and scarves to distribute to those in need during the winter time. A lady she goes to church with works at a school up there in NY and she gives them to children that she knows are from struggling families and can't afford these items. Before I left the good ol' warm Peach State to head to the freezing mountains of NY, I cleaned out the local dollar store and bought a bunch of gloves and hats for men, women and children. The cashier looked at me like I was nuts and thought I was preparing for a blizzard down here. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality that they were for such a cheap price! I do have to admit though, I snagged back a pair of the women's gloves one day I went hunting with Jeff. I left my gloves in dads truck, he was at work and I was in desperate need to prevent losing a couple of digits to frost bite! So for #29, I gave all of them to grandma to bring to church. I hope they give them out soon because it was FREEZING when we were up there, literally...snow, freezing rain/sleet, never got above like 25. I would say that weather is for the birds, but even most of them have enough sense to get the hell out of there in the winter time!
