You know you're from a small town if...

>>> You spend two hours in the grocery store to pick up a gallon of milk and butter, because you have to have a conversation with 90% of the people you pass by.

>>> You can go to the gas station and just say "charge it"

>>> The only traffic jams in town happened because a tractor was somewhere up the road trucking' along.

>>> To buy anything other than groceries, you had to drive 45 minutes to the nearest mall/shopping center.

>>> When you grow up thinking that Arby's was a treat, but had to drive an hour and into another state to get it.

>>> Teachers always referred to you by your parents, who they also taught 20 years earlier.

>>> Your backyard is bigger than any Walmart parking lot.

>>> You have a party and invite only family and close friends you grew up with...which means the whole town is there.

>>> You gave directions according to the only stoplight in town.

>>> You went to school with kids from 10 other small towns

>>> If you weren't at church, someone would be knocking on your door or calling you afterwards to make sure you were ok

>>> When the highlight of the summer was Candy Cone opening for a few months so you could get ice cream cones

>>> When you can't ever get away with ANYTHING because everyone knows your parents or had permission from your parents to whoop your butt!

>>> You don't have to tell your doctor your family history because he already has them all on file

>>> When a chain restaurant or store opens and the whole town is excited about it

>>> Fresh food was always abundant (blueberries, vegetables from the garden...and deer meat on the regular lol)

>>> When everyone in town know which car you drive...

>>> You never lock the doors to your car. Or you never, ever lock the door to your house and probably couldn't even locate your key since it's been so long since you've used it

>>> People either leave town straight out of high school...or become lifers

30 Things That Make Me Happy

I've read a few blogs over the last couple of days where people are listing "32" things that make them happy. I decided to go with 30 because that's my age...and well, I can't think of another 2 right now :)

1) Music, any and all kinds. My husband says I have the most random mixed CD's. One minute we will be listening to Willie Nelson, then Godsmack and then like Eminem. If I had to chose one type to listen to the rest of my life though, it would be some old school rock. Give me some Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Led Zepplin, Joe Cockers, etc. and I will be set!

2) My doggies, Buddy and Dude. They are my babies! Buddy is my #1 baby though, I've had him since he was 8 weeks old and he will be 9 this year. Dude is one of Buddy's 9 puppies and we kept him because he was the only all black one.

3) My Husband Jeff - He is the ying to my yang. A lot of times I plot how to kill him in his sleep while he is keeping me awake with his snoring, but it can easily be forgiven when he is telling me I am beautiful while I'm dressed in baggy sweatpants, an old t-shirt and jacked up hair :)

4) Food - I used to be partial to cereal and pasta, but I have broadened my horizons...and my pant size haha.

5) Thunderstorms - Stick me on a screened porch and I will sleep outside during a thunderstorm!

6) Pajama pants - The softer and baggier, the better!

7) GA Bulldogs - GO DAWGS! Hopefully they GO a little better this year than the last few!

8) Ice Fishing - I love going to NY in February and going ice fishing with my dad. My brother and I used to go all the time when we lived up there and I hate not being able to do it down here!! There is something so calming and peaceful about being out there on a nice day, it's beautiful!

9) Snow...and not the kind we get down here in GA, that $#*+ is miserable! I want some NY snow that I can sled, snowmobile and build a snow fort or chicken with!! And yes, it is possible to build a chicken out of snow...I've seen me and my Mammy do it!

10) Wrap Around Porches - I would sit outside with a good book almost everyday if I had a wrap around porch! This is my dream house and one we are actually looking into possibly building next year...fingers crossed!

11) NASCAR - Yes, I like to watch 43 cars make left turns all day on a Sunday afternoon. The noise usually puts me to sleep after about 10 laps, I have an awesome nap and then wake up with about 50 laps left...in just enough time to watch all the good wrecks!

12) Family - Obviously this list is in no particular order, otherwise this would have been #1, but I do love my family. And while I could probably make an entire Jerry Springer season with some of my relatives, life would be boring without them!

13) Vanilla Flavored Tootsie Rolls...enough said...

14) My beautiful God Children, J.W. (James Wesley) and Holly. I loved them to pieces even before they were here and I am so honored to have been asked to be their Godmother!

15) Family Dinners - Our nephew on Jeff's side started us on the tradition of getting the whole family together either on Saturday or Sunday nights for dinner. I love cooking, love eating and love family, so what's better than that!

16) Candy Crush - We have a love/hate relationship...

17) Starbucks - I don't like hot coffee, but I love me some Starbuck's Caramel or Mocha Frappucinnos! Don't love looking at the calorie count though :(

18) Canning - My grandmother started canning a couple of years back and had me do some with her. I love some homemade jellies, sauces, etc. and hope to get a bunch done this year

19) Reading - Lately the majority of my reading has been limited to People magazine, but stick me on a plane and I will read an entire book in a 2 hour flight!

20) A Time to Kill - BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME! I will watch it 20 times in a row and never get tired of it. "Now imagine she's white"...the quote that will give you chills the 1st time you watch it. Go rent it, you will not be disappointed!

21) Sudafed - These tiny little orange pills have been my best friend the last few days

22) The number "59" - It's been our family number since 1959...it was the number of my grandparents PO box, the phone number for my grandfather's mechanic shop, the racecar number of my grandpa, dad and uncle, all of my cousins have it as their jersey number and it's the number of years my grandparents were married before my grandpa passed away. We see this number EVERYWHERE now. It can be 20 degrees outside, but I start my car and it always says 59. I look at the clock and it will be 1:59, 7:59, etc. I was parked outside of a restaurant to pick up my lunch and the table number where I was parked at was 59...it freaks me out sometimes!

23) Mystery and investigation shows - My husband thinks I watch these so I can learn how to carry out his death and get away with it haha. I love First 48, 48 Hours, Criminal Minds, etc.

24) My Best Friend - Also know as my godchildren's Baby Mama. We have been best friends for about 12-13 years now and I know she is the one person I could call in an emergency and she would drop everything and be here...and vice versa! She doesn't judge me if my house is messy, ir I show up late (which is a given), or if I am being overly dramatic about something. I Luh You Mami! (Jennifer Lopez song reference there, in case you didn't get that)

25) My Sleep - This should actually be my #1, even over family haha. I like my sleep and I will turn into the wicked witch of the south if it is interrupted.

26) ECards - I can find a funny one for any situation in life and they bring a smile to my face on the daily

27) Old Couples - I will turn into a mushy, teary schoolgirl any time I see old couples together. Nothing is sweeter than a 90 year old couple holding hands together and still completely in love after like 70 years of marriage. It still gives me hope with the world

28) Sunny Days - I know, I said I like thunderstorms too, but I love sitting out at the lake on a day that is sunny, about 75 and a little windy outside. Give me a hammock and I'm golden!

29) My box fan and my blanket from my mother-in-law - I absolutely CANNOT sleep without a box fan going. If I travel out of town and am driving, you can bet your ass it is going with me. My mother-in-law also gave me a fuzzy blanket for Christmas a couple years ago and I literally slept with it almost every night since. Yes, I have been guilty of putting it in a vacuum seal bag and sticking it in my suitcase when flying to NY...I feel like a 3 year old that can't sleep without my blankie

30) Movie Theatres - The best way to go and see a movie! Get there early, get your buttered popcorn, frozen coke and then find a seat in the top row!

Acts of Kindess #40-43: Valentine Cards, Derby Ducks & Lupus Walk

Act of Kindness #40 - I had completely forgot about doing this one and I have my friend Aimee to thank for it. She had tagged me in a link on Facebook in early February. It wound up being for Children's Healthcare in Texas and you could sign up to create a Valentine's Day card for kids in the hospital. I hated the thought of any child being in the hospital, for any holiday, so I thought this was a great idea to let them know they are being thought of. I emailed the link out to my company and a few of them replied back to let me know that they had their kids also send some cards. They actually have a Link that you can go to at any time and send a card just because...go check it out!!

Act of Kindness #41 - I usually get emails all the time from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA). Some have articles about their child of the month, some bring awareness to a particular disease and others have information about different fund raisers they have. I scrolled through one I received the other day and they had a "Wish List" of items that they needed, most on a daily basis. I went through to see what kind of things were on there and decided to donate to purchase Meal Bag Items. Basically it's meal bags that are given to parents who are not able to travel or leave the hospital to purchase food. Jeff and I know all to well how this is, since there were plenty of days/nights we couldn't just leave and grab something to eat when Taylor was in the hospital for weeks at a time. Thankfully CHOA had kitchens set up with pots/pans, utensils and a stove, so there were plenty of times I packed up food to cook there. That was about the only way we could get Taylor to eat. Her requests were usually my spaghetti, fried venison and my green beans haha. We were fortunate to live as close to the hospital as we did. There are plenty of parents that live hours and states away. I hope the meal bags help those families out!

Act of Kindness #42 - If you've been keeping up with some of my other posts, you know I am all about helping out when it comes to the Special Olympics. I've repelled down a 20-story building, donated to my friends fundraisers when her son was participating in walks, etc., or bought t-shirts to help raise funds. I received an email the other day to Adopt a Duck for Atlanta's 9th Annual Duck Derby. Basically you purchase these rubber ducks that they send around the Little Hooch at White Water and if your duck is one of the first 6 across the finish line, you get whatever type of prize they have lined up. I purchased my Quack Pack, which hatched me 7 adopted ducks and they mailed me a souvenir junior duck. Isn't he cute?!

Act of Kindness #43 - One of my co-workers lost his wife almost 8 years ago to complication from Lupus. Since that time, he and his family have been participating in the Annual Walk for Lupus in Atlanta. Jeff and I have joined them on the walk and it is truly an amazing experience. There are THOUSANDS of people that show up for the event, it is wonderful! We received an email from Adam the other day with the information about the walk for this year (see below). Jeff and I donated to his team and will hopefully join them on the walk again this year. Feel free to visit his team page to get more information or to make a donation, there is no amount too small!!! And a HUGE high five to my company, ARCO Design/Build, for their generous donation again this year!

"Friends & Family,

It is that time of year again....spring is in the air, and that means one thing - The 8th Annual Walk for Lupus Now in Piedmont Park on April 26th at 3:00pm!

As most of you know, my first wife, Rachel, passed away from complications from Lupus. Yvonne’s Aunt Jackie sadly passed away 3 weeks before the 2011 Walk from complications from Lupus.  Lupus has struck again by affecting Rachel’s step-mother, Cathy.  We are honoring all of these strong women and their past and current struggles.

Following are summaries of each of these women’s struggles:

Rachel had chronic medical issues starting in her teens and was ultimately diagnosed with Lupus at age 27. She was a loving, vibrant young wife and the mother of 17-month-old Lilly, when at a moment’s notice she became terribly ill. After a 12-hour roller coaster day at the hospital, she tragically passed away at the age of 32 on May 12, 2006.

Yvonne's 45 year old aunt Jackie battled Lupus for several years. She struggled with seizures and other complications with little to no responsiveness to medications. She tragically passed away on April 19, 2010 and is survived by her husband, son and six brothers and sisters.

Cathy was diagnosed in 2010.  She has been struggling with the ups and downs that come with a Lupus diagnosis to get her symptoms under control.  Her strength is inspiring.

Since we can't bring Rachel or Jackie back and as we try and support Cathy as much as possible, we are hoping we can bring awareness to the public about this devastating disease. Hopefully this will honor Rachel & Jackie’s memory, honor Cathy’s struggle and hopefully keep this story from repeating itself.

Thanks to Mark and Rick, ARCO has agreed to be a sponsor for a STUNNING 8th time for this event and support Team ARCO – Building for a Cure.  Just so you know, ARCO is a TOP SPONSOR again this year with a super-generous donation of $5,000!!

My goal this year is to have at least 20 people walk with Team ARCO – Building for a Cure.  If you plan on attending, please let me know so I can get an accurate head count and keep you updated.

In addition, if you are interested in donating (not required by any means), please visit the team website at http://www.lupuswalkatlanta.com/teamarco

Thanks again for ARCO’s support and for everyone who has participated and/or donated over the years!

Please join Team ARCO – Building for a Cure!!

THANKS!

I need a vacation from my vacation...

I think I should stop planning vacations to New York for a while. They say things happen in 3's, so the fact that this was the 3rd crappy trip to NY in a row, I hope I get left alone next time! First bad trip was when Grandpa passed away as I was on my way up, the last trip I was the one who discovered my dad's dead dog they morning after we got there, then this trip last week was torture from minute one and ended with a bang (literally).

For starters, I had took off work on Weds because I had to take care of some baby making appts. I felt the timing of everything was off, tried to call the Dr. first thing to reschedule for next month and couldn't get anyone on the phone until it was too late. Long story short, I'm convinced we aren't pregnant again this month and pretty positive I just pissed away $1,000 against my will. I spent the rest of the morning/early afternoon in tears because I was so mad and upset. Went from there to meet Jeff for lunch, which made me feel a little better...venting always does haha. Then I spent the next 2 hours sleeping in the car in the parking lot of his work because we had to leave at 3 to catch a plane and it was pointless to drive back home.

Getting the the airport was fine...getting to the park-n-ride was fine...checking in and boarding the plane was fine. The plane ride itself...not so much. We hit a little turbulence on the way up, no big deal. United actually has these little snack boxes you can buy which was great because we were starving at that point. I paid the $7.99 for my box, ate my snacks and then wasted the $7.99 I spent on my box. The turbulence when we were landing was horrible! I felt like I was on a roller coaster the way we kept dipping down really quick and then back up again. Needless to say, I was THAT person who needed the throw up bag they keep in the back of the seat in front of you. I felt better after, but then as soon as I got in Dad's truck I felt nauseous all over again and felt that way for most of the 2 hour ride to his house. Jeff wanted to stop and get something to drink and while he was in the store, the urge was too much. I didn't even make it inside to the bathroom, I made it as far as the back of dad's truck. Then, felt perfectly fine...I couldn't have done that 2 hours ago?!?!

Ha! I wish this were true. Looked more like a hot mess...

The rest of the trip was ok. We stayed bundled up on Thurs because the high was 12 and wind chill factor was -19...ain't nobody got time for dat! Jeff and I made a run to Walmart because it was dad's birthday and I wanted to make him a basket of all the goodies he likes to eat...jerky, summer sausage, cheese, crackers, garlic stuffed olives, black olives, chicken biskit with Easy Cheese (canned cheesy yumminess!), nuts, etc. Then I made him a lemon cake which is his favorite. Friday we visited with Grandma and went out to eat that night with her and our family friend, Paul. Saturday we attempted to go ice fishing...it was a bust. We all caught at least one fish, but nothing worth keeping and the wind was starting to get to us after a couple of hours. The scenery was beautiful though!

Look, it's Nemo!

That's right, mine was bigger :)

Getting ready for the 1st hole of the morning

Ice was a lot thicker than the 1st time we brought Jeff...18" vs. 3"

Sunday we heard from Jeff's mom and she let us know that the water heater busted at the house and our area downstairs had flooded. Apparently they caught it before it made it to our living room, but it got both bedrooms, the kitchen and the bathroom. They ended up calling a company in who ripped up the carpet in the bedrooms, the baseboards throughout the house and put in blowers to dry it out. So we thought everything would still pretty much be in place, just minus the carpeting...yeah, not so much. This is what we walked in the door to:

What was my living room...

As soon as you walk in our door

View from spare room looking at door...

My bedroom...all my furniture was moved around and put on blocks, then all the stuff from the floor/under the bed was put on my bed
Bathroom - No, we do not keep a Hope Chest in our bathroom. it was in my bedroom
 Our Kitchen

After inspecting everything, we need to replace all of the bottom cabinets in the kitchen because water soaked up into them about 3" from the bottom. The carpet in the bedrooms need to be replaced as well as the baseboards throughout the house. It ruined the bottom part of a hutch cabinet we were using as storage, but not a huge deal, and we have to cut the bottom shelf off the shelving rack Jeff built for the kitchen. The only thing I was worried about was my great-great grandmother's hope chest and china cabinet, but both are fine and that's all that matters! We currently have 2-3 blowers in every room to dry things out, there are a couple of machines set up to suck the moisture out of the air and they are draining water into the sinks, then everything but our big furniture is sitting in the living room floor. I am most upset about the fact that we made sure the house was spotless so we could come back from our vacation to a clean house and relax...God has a wicked sense of humor! I have a slight panic attack every time I walk thru down here now. My OCD kicks in and I want to put everything back up where it belongs and clean (the floors are FILTHY), but I can't until the repairs are made. Until that time, we are staying in my in-laws spare bedroom because it's 83 degrees in there from the blowers, there are wires and crap everywhere, and my furniture is all still on blocks. I am beyond thankful that we have a place to stay and grateful for all of their help!

What Memories Will You Leave Behind?

Yesterday we received news from Jeff's brother, Chad, that their father had passed away. I say "father" instead of "dad" because the person that Jeff considers his Dad, is not the same person that passed yesterday.

Chad tried calling Jeff, but he usually doesn't answer unless I am calling him during work hours, so I told Chad I would let him know. I called Jeff and gave him the news and then he just sat there silent for a few seconds. When he finally spoke he said "Is it bad that I truly do not have any feelings about that? Does that make me a bad person?" Knowing the history they had, I cannot say as though I blame him. His father was never around when they were growing up, was in and out of the picture until he was 3-4 years old and then not at all really after that. He said he could count on 2 hands how many times he's seen him in the last 44 years, which is really sad. Even more sad is the fact that he's never lived more than 30-45 minutes from Jeff and his siblings, and never made an effort. I also let Jeff's sister know the news and she pretty much had the same reaction. She said she had no tears for the man and the only things she was sad about was that fact that he never got his life together enough to be a dad to any of them.

Tammy and Jeff talked for a while about it last night and both of them decided they would not be going to the viewing or the funeral. Jeff even said he would give it until this morning to see if he might change his mind, but today he feels the same way. He said he just didn't feel right showing up there to pay his respects and put on an act that would make everyone think that he had been a good father to him. He said he feels like this was just a guy he knew, someone he met in passing. I agreed with Tammy when she said that he knew for a couple of weeks that he was on his death bed and if he wanted to make amends or having anything to do with them, that would have been the time that he could have made some sort of effort or even apologized. The fact that none of them even knew of his condition these past few week just seems to speak volumes about the relationship they had. Jeff said it was always a relationship of broken promises and disappointments.

I have to say that I think it was probably for the best that he was never in the picture. Because of that, Jeff, Tammy and Stacey were raised and taken care of by a man that has always treated them as they were his own. Ken married Jeff's mom when Jeff was 5 and has been there ever since. He didn't have to do anything he has for them over the past 40 years and I think it speaks volumes to the type of man he is. I believe Jeff is the dependable, hardworking guy he is today because of his Dad.

So my question is, what kind of memories will you leave behind for your kids, family or friends? I know that none of us are perfect, we all have our faults. But when your day comes, what will those left behind have to say about you? What kind of impact did you leave on them? I would never want my kids to question whether or not I was worthy of them paying their respects to me. My heart hurts in knowing that Jeff will never have the chance to really know the person responsible for him being here, the one that should have been his provider, protector and put him above all others. On the flip side though, I take comfort in knowing that there was a MAN willing to fill those shoes, pick up those pieces and take on that responsibility. He has earned every right to be called DAD. Thank You Ken for being the man you didn't have to be!

Acts of Kindness #37 - 39

Well my goal to complete 59 Acts of Kindness by Feb 22 (Grandpa's 80th Birthday) came and went a few days ago. I finally just decided that it didn't matter when they got done, it wasn't a race and I didn't need to put a deadline on it. I want to do things that make a difference, that truly matter to others and you can't really rush that. So, right now I am at #39 and I am just fine with that!

Act #37 - My friend, Brandy, posted a link on Facebook to purchase World Down Syndrome Day t-shirts. I liked them, I wanted to support and bring awareness, so I bought one :) I plan to wear mine on World Down Syndrome Day, which is March 21st this year!

Act #38 - My Aunt Jill text me a couple of weeks ago to let me know that she helped out some families at Christmas time in Grandpa's name and wanted to know if I could use that towards my 59 Acts. Well, of course! My whole reasoning for doing this is for it to be done in Grandpa's honor, not for any personal praise. So the more help, the merrier! I am waiting for her to email me the details and will update this one later. Thanks Aunt Jill!!!

Act #39 - I came across an article about 2 brothers that passed away 10 days apart from each other. You can read the article Here. It absolutely broke my heart because I could never imagine losing my brother at such a young age, but much less imagine my parents having to bury 2 kids just days apart. One brother was traveling from Minnesota to Alaska for work and when his fiance hadn't heard from him, she filed a missing person report. They found him dead in his hotel room from an apparent heart attack. He was only 30 years old. His brother was devastated at unexpectedly losing his brother and best friend. The morning after his brother's funeral, he was found dead from an enlarged heart condition. He was only 31. Both left behind young daughters and neither had life insurance. A fund was set up to help with funeral arrangements and daily living costs for the families. Jeff and I donated in the hopes of bringing just a little bit of comfort during this sorrowful time. If you would like to make a donation as well, you can click HERE for the Go Fund Me site.

Acts of Kindness #34-36

Act #34 - My dad has worked for the Town of Bethel Highway Department in NY for the last 18 1/2 years...God that seems like a long time when put in writing!! In those 18 1/2 years my dad and the guys he works with have absolutely worked their asses off. I remember in the winter time having to get up at 2-3 a.m. because he got called into work. Ladd and I would pile into his truck, still half asleep and wearing our pajamas, drive to my grandparent's house and then climb back into bed over there so we could catch the bus in the morning. There were days when he would work 18-20 hour shifts while only working on 3 hours of sleep. My dad was and still is the hardest working man I've ever met. He was a single father who worked all day long (too long if you ask me), cut his own firewood to last an entire winter, usually helped every other person in town with their projects and still made sure we had a decent meal every single night. Through having friends on Facebook that still live in my dads area in NY, I have been able to see just how bad their weather has been so far this winter. Any time I see people talking about the snowy weather, I know my dad and his guys are out there trying to make the roads safe to travel on. So for all those people that complain about bad road conditions, just know there are guys that have been out since 2 a.m., working with a couple hours of sleep, who have had their time taken away from their families (holidays included), so that they can make sure you can make it to work, the grocery store or just to go get your hair did. Make sure you show your appreciation to these guys as well, they have a hard job!

During Christmas I ordered some cookies from Cheryl's Cookies and had them delivered to all of the guys at the "Town Barn" a.k.a. my dad's work. We get these delivered to us from some of our subcontractors and they are AWESOME! Dad said he got the package, which I sent to his attention, and he was all excited to take it home and break into them...until he realized they weren't just for him haha. I included a note that said "Thanks to all of you guys for your hard work during this winter season and for the time you spend away from your families". I hope they enjoyed them.

Act #35 - I saw a post on Facebook a friend of mine was tagged in that had a list of items that were needed to help a family during the Christmas holiday. It was an email that had the names of 5 kids along with some items that they would like for Christmas. I have come across organizations that help families like this, but this one struck me in a different way. A lot of times you see kids or adults that ask for video games, phones, laptops, etc., all really pricey things that really aren't necessities. This one was nothing like that at all. These kids were asking for pants, undershirts, sweaters, socks, shampoos, deodorant, fishing rods & lures, remote control cars...items that were either NEEDED or that involved being outdoors and I absolutely LOVED that fact. The parents had requested that nothing be purchase for themselves, they wanted to make sure that the kids were taken care of instead. There were a few people that responded with a couple of things they wanted to purchase off of the list, but as of only a week before Christmas there were a lot of things that were still needed. I couldn't stand the thought of these kids not having things to open, but I also couldn't afford to get everything by myself...so I recruited my company. I have to say that ARCO Design/Build has the most kind hearted bosses EVER! I emailed my one boss with the list and asked if we could do anything to help thinking he would say like $50-100, if anything. He replied back and said "Would $300 work?"...uh, yes sir!! So not only was I able to get everything else off the list (about 8 pair of jeans, packs of undershirts and socks, numerous sweaters, 2 remote control cars and more), I was able to go on a shopping spree without breaking my own bank lol. We were also able to give the parents a gift card to Longhorn's. They didn't ask for anything, but we felt they deserved to at least maybe have a date night out together. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when those kids opened their gifts.

Act #36 - I am always a sucker for whatever donation thing that Publix has going on. They usually have one that you can donate a couple of bucks to when you check out and they are always good organizations. This time it was for the Special Olympics and you could donate $1, $5, $10 or "other", so I went for $10...I would have loved to do $59, but it was right after Christmas and I am broke haha. I know a couple of people that are special needs or have children that are and I am all for anything to help give them the chance to have the same opportunities as the rest of us!
